Thanx for air cleaner box latch FAQ, and what's the foam for? 700

Just followed the directions in the FAQ last night and fixed the completely missing latches on my 1991 745T's air cleaner box. Easy and very sturdy results. My thanks to the author of that article. For anyone else, I highly recommend following his advice. Right down to buying the spring clamps or clips from McMaster-Carr. They are solid stainless steel and of very high quality.

Only one little change I'd suggest, and I found it by accident: If you have to go out and buy pop-rivets (1/8" X 1/4" usefull depth), buy a little package of the backing washers (or whatever they are called) too. That is unless you already have little washers that will do the job at home. Then use the backing washers or little washers instead of fabricating a metal plate to place on the back (inside the airbox) side of each rivet. My pop-rivets were stored under the package of backing washers, so the discovery that I had the backing washers made the job much quicker and easier. Hadn't used those things since 1981 or '82 and forgot I had them.

Now, the foam question - What purpose does the large block of foam UNDER the air filter do? This is the big block of foam that is on the "outside" of the filter, and does not completely cover the filter either, so it can't be a pre-filter. It sits down in the recesses of the filter box. Will it hurt anything that I forgot to put it back today when I changed the air filter? Did not seem like it does much, except possibly help muffle airflow noises at full throttle.
