headliner material '88 745 700

I have read the warnings about trying to use 1/4 inch headliner material and the strong suggestions that 1/8 inch material be used. The only 1/8 material I can get quickly and locally is a taupe which I don't like. However, the grey that I do like seems to be neither 1/4 nor 1/8 but measures 3/16 inches. Has anyone ever used this thickness material and would there be problems if I did? Is the big problem with the operation and movement of the sunroof inner cover? Does it not bypass the mechanisms if the material is too thick? Thanks for any help/insight you can provide.
