A/C went dead overnight. 700 1988

A/C worked fine Tues evening, but did nothing Wed lunchtime.
RPM's still increase when it is turned on.
I don't hear the compressor clutch pull in, and the electric fan at the condensor doesn't come on.
It seems to blow out air that gets increasingly hotter, but that may be my imagination.
I tried to fill with a can of 134 from Wal-Mart last night, but it didn't seem to take any.
Where do I start to investigate?
