question about my mom's '85 200

The car is an '85 245 automatic with 270k miles and serviced by the book its entire life. The differential whines on deceleration and is quiet on acceleration. According to a technician the pinion gear is wearing out.

Is it reasonable to expect a worn pinion at this age and mileage?

If so, would synthetic lube help extend the life of the diff, or is it already gone?

Thanks.
