Not coming back down to idle 1800 1973

When I really get on the gas, the engine continues to race after I have released the pedal and will continue unless I tap it a few times. I've been misfiring a little too (maybe unrelated). What should I check first? Throttle Switch? Thermal timer? My Haynes manual suggests "sticking control." I don't even know what that means. What do you say? Thanks.
