overdrive problems 200 1989

My overdrive light and gear turns on and off intermitently. Sometimes the light --arrow light--is on when I first start the car. Sometimes the engage button works and sometimes it does not. Freeway driving will sometimes experience the light and gear slipping out of overdrive without warning. Where do I start? Thnaks much in advance. 89 DL WGN 83K
