Where are the alternator diodes on a 1989 240? 200

I've got charging problems on a 1989 240. I think the
voltage regulator is bad (the "battery light" in the instrument
cluster sometimes comes on, and sometimes doesn't, when the key is ON but the engine is OFF). Are the nine rectifier diodes part of the (separately replaceable) voltage regulator, or are they inside the alternator?
