Hello friends.
Does anyone know what the symptoms are if a car needs Tie Rod replacements?
I took my car ('87 760GLE 2.8litre B280F)for wheel alignment because it was pulling to the right in addition to the steering sitting slightly to the right. The first place I took it to was going to charge me Cnd$60, which I thought quite reasonable, no sooner had he put the car up then he came back to tell me I needed an outer tie rod replacement. The price he quoted me was very high in the $250range! I didnt pursue it. I managed to get an outer tire rod from C.Tire for $23.00. I took it to Midas and asked them to do an outerTie rod replacement and alignment. No sooner had the car beenjacked up then the guy came in to tell me, my outer tie rod is fine but its the inner one that needs replacement. Confused, I figured it would be best to consult the good people on here before doing anything. Incidentally, the steering boot ( the rubber that goes over the tie-rods) has snapped of from its clip. Volvo dealer told me I can just put another clip and secure it instead of buying a new one and spending $ on labour. This Im pretty sure was deliberately done by the first guy I took the car to. However as you can see, Im in a fix here. Please if you know how easier it is for me to definitly know, if at all, any of the tie-rods need replacement, kindly reply to this post with advice.
BTW, there are two different types of Inner Tie rods, one for a CAM type steering rod and another for a ZF. The only way to know this is by checking the plate under the engine hood. However, I cant seem to find that plate!
Haynes manual potrays the job of Tie Rod replacement to be minor, about an hour or so. Incidentally, I know the Haynes manual for these cars are hard to find. If anyone needs info from it, feel free to ask me any questions from it.
