horrible drivetrain noise 200 1986

My 240 with 4-spd/OD manual transmission (M46, I think) suddendly started making a really loud screetching, grinding noise. But it only happens if I'm moving, clutch engaged, without accelerating. If I'm stopped, it's quiet, whether in gear or in neutral. If I'm in neutral, rolling at speed, it's just as bad as if I'm in gear.

Unfortunately, the only thing I can think of that could do this is that the transmission shafts are messed up. And the only way I can think of to check it is to pull the transmission. Does anyone have any suggestions??
