740 16 valve could it be the head gasket? 700

Hi Everyone,

I bought a '89 740 GLE 16 valve last week and cannot get the darn thing to rev up past 1500 or so rpms. Wanting to save money instead of just replacing parts, I decided to take the car in to a local garage for a fuel pressure check. The guy still hasn't let me know anything about what's going on with the car despite my stopping by there several times since I dropped the car off. My guess is that the problem could be the fuel pressure regulator as the plugs are getting a bit wet. Also, when I unplug the AMM, the car doesn't go into the limp home mode. With the AMM unplugged, the car refuses to start altogether. By the way, a Volvo tech replaced the timing belt, did a valve job, and some other key 16 V things while it was there. This was about 2 years ago and the car only has about 4K on it since the work was performed. Now I can't help but think the car could have a bad head gasket. There is NO oil in the coolant, though. I've never had a head gasket go, so I don't know exactly what the symptoms are. We need more people who know Volvos here in WV. My only other alternative is to take the car to the Volvo dealer for sevice ( and pay a fortune). Any ideas would really help as I need to get the 740 running.

Cheers,
Dave
