battery hold-down rusted solid 900 1992

Battery's a goner; who knows how old--Volvo battery in 14-yr-old car we bought about 3 years ago. The vertical threaded rod which screws in down there someplace to fasten the hold-down plate is SOLID. Swamped the area with PBlaster and attacked the loop end with a crescent wrench over the loop--no movement. Will try it again tonight. Can't see any way to get at it from below.
Assuming that I wind up breaking the damned thing off, anybody got any suggestions for a substitute hold-down when I get the new battery in?
This is the spousemobile, and significant other is not happy driving my S70 felony flyer while I try to figure this one out.
TIA
