A couple of months ago there were many posts about a 1977 Volvo that made the sound captured in the wav file in this post: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=784976 The posts went on until about April 24, but I could not find out the resolution of the problem, which was posted by Joe HC. What was the problem with the 77 (valves, piston slap, rod bearing)?

My 89 245 (178k) makes a very similar sound. It stays about the same whether the engine is warm or cold. It came on gradually, and the car seems to start and run fine.
