Troubleshooting A/C problem - 940 900 1993

The air conditioning on my '93 940 sedan is not working. I checked and the A/C clutch is not engaging. Someone suggested that this system has a low pressure switch that keeps the system from engaging if the system pressure is too low. Please advise if this is true. If so, how can I override this switch long enough to charge the system and what high/low readings should I have on a fully-charged system? Other thoughts/suggestions?

BTW - I have an A/C manifold set (for R-12 units) and worked on R-12-based systems before (including replacing compressors, air dryers, expansion valves, the condenser and evaporator on different cars). However, I have not worked on a R-134a-based system. How do the system pressures for R-134 systems differ from R-12 systems?

Thanks,
Henry
