sudden loss of power 200 1987

I was driving my car today and it started doing some strange loss of power thing. Occasionally when accelerating the power just dies for a second and then goes back to normal. Then one time this happened when I was coming up to a stop light and I stopped at the light for a minute or so and when i tryed to take off the car died. It took about 3-4 seconds of cranking to get it started again. Usually it will start right up with one crank. Any ideas on what is causing this?
