Backfires/misses for a while, then runs fine...what could it be? 200

Hey All! I'm looking at a '76 wagon, 129,xxx original miles, in pretty nice shape. I test drove it, and it backfired for about ten-fifteen minutes, then ran a lot better, tho still rough. Any thoughts on what it could be? I've looked at my Haynes manual, and it's all over the map; fuel system (filter, low pressure) timing/ignition/plugs, and compresion issues. I'm an LH Jet driver and don't know much about the early Volvos, so any ideas would be great. Thanks, and have a rad weekend!!!
