intermittant fuel gauge failure 900 1993

The fuel gauge on my '93 940t has developed this habit of occasionally not responding when starting up the car, and then the next time I start it up, it reads fine. It did this on wive.gov last night right after she stopped for gas, and she freaked out.

Any ideas on this one?
