Well, changed the plugs from the platinums to NGKs and noticed no real difference, but the rest of the car isn't really up to making it easy to notice any differences... We adjusted the valves, and we put a new dist. cap on it(the old one didn't NEED to be replaced, but we did anyway) and regapped the points. We also tried messing with the stupid weber to make it work better... No avail. We tried taking off the choke's plates to see if it would run better than having them partially closed 100% of the time, but the carb wouldn't work above maybe 1/8 throttle, it would just choke(literally, if that's possible...) the car. So, i put those back in, and before I actually drove it, it was being it's normal self again. But when we went out for our drive after it all, the carb was actually acting worse than normal, well, the carb itself though, i think the ignition was slightly better than it had been previously...
Then there was the compression testing... When i first got the car, we didn't quite do it correctly, but the car read around 110-115 all accross the board. This time, when Andrew and i did it, we did it right, and got 140 for the first two(made me happy when i saw those, much better than some stupid 110psi crap). BUT THEN! We got 120ish on both cylinders three and four... So much for my happy readouts of 140 on the previous two though. The car doesn't run rough though...? and all the plugs looked good, actually, all the platinums were fine, one MAY have been a TAD whiter than the others, but all seemed well with them. We put some oil into the third and fourth to see what would happen, and we came up with 170psi and 180psi respectively. Keep in mind that we didn't measure how much oil we put in, and the fourth did get more oil... But i still thought that both of those were reading right on the top of, if not better than stock compression ratings for a b20f...? Any thoughts? or am i just getting ahead of myself... It has happened before you know ;-).
And then onto the drive... Wow! SO MUCH FUN! I NEED A NEW STEERING BOX! Or, how do you adjust them again? In detail please? I can't even find my Haynes manual, and yeah... This is the same steering box that i found empty of fluid a couple weeks ago, and i filled it up with some remaining gear oil i had, and it has since leaked, but not emptied yet, oil is still visible when you pull off the cap. It does scare me though, like on the drive today(WHICH CAN I SAY AGAIN KICKED ARSE!) what if the steering goes out?!?! Uh oh for sure. Great drive, awesome getting the car to actually get semi close to its limits, and have a heck of a time doing it. Great switchbacks where he took us, we'll definitely be going again... But THOSE DAMN WEBERS! He has one too, and he can't get the linkage to work correctly, he was going with an idle speed of 2krpms for a while, but for today we settled for a good idle and low power(hardly wants to rev above 4.5k he says...) so we could check the timing, which has never been on a light before... It was a tad over 25* he decided, and about lets say 1050 rpms. His engine is a rebuilt (about 1200 miles ago) 75 b20 with the thin headgasket on it. And acutally, his car was doing the same blueish smoke after acceleration thing, although not quite as bad, but definitely still there... And about what i was trying to say about those WEBERS! His is pretty new, and it's an electric one, that popped part of the choke assembly off when he was driving all by itself and so he doesn't have a choke either. His car also has problems with giving it lots of gas in the lower rpms and his choke plates are vertical, mine are not. But what i was trying to say, is that THEY BACKFIRE! I thought it was just my carb's stupid problem, but his did it too! On the same turn i noticed it, i mean i had heard it earlier on the drive once or twice, but on this one switchback, both of our cars did it at the same point when we put it down into second. Overall his car probably backfired 2-3 times on our 20 min drive, and my car maybe 4-5 times.
That's all for now folks! And Andrew got some pictures of me in motion... I can't wait to see them! =D
