temp. guage spikes when headlights on 200 1987

Lately whenever I turn on the headlights in my 86 245, the temp. gauge immediately begins to climb into the red. Turning them off causes the gauge to drop. No other accessories cause the gauge to do this, incl the AC. The belts seem tight enough; I just replaced them. The water pump seems ok, the radiator's been replaced.
Temp. compensation board?
Harmonic balancer?
I'm puzzled.
Help.
