How I converted my 240 to power windows: 200

I have a 1988 244 DL that as you all might know I converted to power windows. I just wanted to share the steps that I took to complete this project. First of all I want to thank all of the nice folks on this board who gave me advice reguarding this conversion.
I started this project by going to my local wreaking yard and finding a 1986 244 GL that was fitted with power windows from the factory. I started with removing the carpeting seats and dash and everything I could form that car to easily pull out all of the componets and wireing. I spent about three hours in the junk yard gathering all of these parts, but at the end of the day I knew exactly how everything went togeather. Oh I almost forgot, the car's in the junkyard often don't have a battery so, with the swith removed inside the car and two wires the window moter can be jumped to test and move to the required lowered position to work. I'm almost sure that I used the middle holes for this, but I'm not sure.

I few weeks later, I found some time to install all of the parts in my car. I started by taking off the door panels, the seats, the carpet, the glovebox, the insturument cluster and the center console. I also had to remove the passenger side kick panel and kindo of move the drivers one out of the way. I carefully pulled back the felt behind the kickpanles to gain axis to the door wireing. I also had to unbolt the bottom bolt of the seatbelts to gain axis to the area under the seat belt covers to axis rear door wireing. This sounds scary but it was really not that bad. I started with the drivers door and pulled out all of the manual window componets. I then un pluged the power door lock wire and ran it and the speakerwire back through the rubber groument in the door jam in order to more easily run the two large plugs that came with the window moter through it and into the car. once I got the two main plugs and the two little fuse connecters ran throught he rubber groument I ran the power door lock wire and the speaker wire back through into the door. after that was don I jiggled the rubber groument back into place and it was time to fit the moter which was connected to the regualtor back into the door. In doing this I carefully raised the glass making sure that it was still on the track to the top and got the moter/regulato tastened inside the door. with this done, I lowered the glass and connected the three washers and locking clips to the window slides. I used this same process to intall the other three motors, with one exception. I did not find it neccesary to run power door lock and speaker wires back out through the door as the plugs from the other moters were not nearly as large. With all of the moters fitted to the doors it became time to hook of the wires inside the car. Back to the drivers side: there were two small wires that plugged into the fuse box and they are color coded. One was for the power windows, and the other is for the power window relay. I connected those. One of the big plugs connected to a wire that ran just below the air vents and housed the power window relay that clipped just below that area and contineued until it pluged into the plug that came in from the pasenger side power window. Back to the drivers side one more time: The other big plug connects to a wire that connects to the back windows. That will need to be ran through a tunnel on the drivers side under the sound instalation. There is a metal tray that can be lifted up to feed the wires through easier. This wire actually has two plugs to it. One powers the RL door and the hower goes across the very back of the center councel and connects to the RR door.

With all of the wires ran, it is now time to adjust and lube each moter. I raised and lowered the moters with them fairly loose but still snug until I got to the point where they lifted and and lowered as effecitly as possible. In orded to test each window, it must have it must have all swithches connected to it, both the master swithch and the passenger. Once this is done for all four doors it is time to put your door panels and other inside door parts back on. I found this a good time to fully clean the hard to reach area's in the interier. After that was done I started putting it all back to tegeather.

This was a lot of work. It was worth it for me, as I hope to drive my 244 many millions of miles and many years. This project has made my car a lot more confortable to me then going around to each of the four doors and seperatly rolling down the windows. It took me a whole weekend and a monday evening. Some might work faster, but I was in no real hurry. I found this a great way to learn more about my car, and get the interior as clean as new. I would strongly recommend that If one considers this project that they pull their own parts from the donar car so they know how everything will go back togeather.

Here is a list of parts for this conversion.
Door panels: optional but nice
Power window armrests and screws
Switches
Wireing and relay
Moters: don't connect from relay, it will pull right out the door.
All washers and clips and bolts from the donar car. Washers and clips you will already have but it is nice to have extra incase one gets mangled or dissapers.

Tools-
Metric socket set
Screw drivers of various heads
Glass cleaner to clean off all grease from windows that you will get on.
Lots of patience: you will be glad when you are done!
Some type of lube for the moters.
