instrument panel lights are all on 200

I recently had the instrument panel off my wife's '79 244. Several days after replacing it, all the lights on the instrument panel went on and after my son drove the car, the battery discharged and the car stopped. I know I need to have a good connection with the amp light to have the alternator work. I'm guessing there's a common ground someplace that I loosened. I can't find any loose connections at the panel itself. Any suggestions where to look?
