where does my fuel go? 200 1990

i get about 215 miles out of the top half of my tank, but only about 100 out of the bottom half.! can anyone explain why?
also, i noticed yesterday that the gauge said i had about a half of a tank and i went around a long curve on a highway exit ramp and when i came out of it i had less than a third of a tank. it doesn't seem right.
