lag in throttle response... poor overall mpg, and acceleration.. thoughts? 700 1988

Gang,

I've been getting some really crappy throttle response from my brick (88 740 GLE non turbo, stick).

It just seems gutless on acceleration from idle all the way to highway speeds. Furthermore, it is burning gas like crazy.... not to mention backfiring on deceleration.

I pulled the AMM off the air cleaner last night (witb it still connected to the throttle body hose) and just played with opening the throttle body... there was always a noticeable lag before the air actually got sucked into the engine. It actually sounded like it was going to stall each time I opened the throttle body.

I've done a bunch of checks. The AMM checks out electrically according to resistance specs. The fuel injectors have been cleaned with new seals. Both pumps are relatively new. The temp sensor is new, throttle body has been cleaned with a new gasket.

any thoughts? It sounds like the thing is running rich. I'd love to hear what you think.

THanks.

Mike
