Speakers, wires, or head unit? 200

Hi all,
A few months ago my left front speaker would produce normal sound for several minutes before cutting out. Now it never produces sound. My rear door speakers (wagon) make muddy sound and vibrate the door panels. Only the right front door speaker works. Any suggestions for testing the speakers or wiring before investing in a new head unit? I listen almost exclusively to news radio so fidelity isn't a concern. I'd be happy if it just worked like it originally sounded.
