16 valve to 8 valve conversion 700 1989

I'm betting this has been discussed, but can a 16 valve head on an 89 745 be replaced with an 8 valve head, in this case from an 86 Turbo? The 89 belongs to a friend. Timing belt broke, accompanied by the usual bad news, i.e., bent valves. I have a spare head, and I've always been under the assumption the 16 valve used the exact same block as the 8 valve.
