86 740 Turbo Wagon, AW71 automatic. Recently swapped out my distributor for a rebuilt one solving a troublesome no-start condition. Car ran like a dream for a month. Two weeks ago, the overdrive light came on and would not go out, and clicking the selector on the gearshift for overdrive wouldn't make it go out either. Now I have to force kickdown to get it to go into overdrive when speed is. In fact, it seems that gears 2 and 3 boost the tach up to 3300 or so before it will slip into the next gear -- however overdrive now always has to be coaxed and as soon as I slow down from, say, 65 to 60 I can feel it drop back into third even though there was no swift deceleration or breaking involved.
Swapped the OD relay with a junker but have no guarantee it's actually working right either. In any event there was no change...light on console stays lit and the selector switch still would not disengage it. No click when I select it either, and I think I remember hearing the slighest "click" when I would disengage it before (I could be wrong). So I read a bit here about the solenoid and thought to locate it so I drove to a local service station to have them put it up on a lift, but I'd never actually serviced or seen the OD solenoid before and it wasn't in the place I expected it to be and I didn't have a diagram or photo of it with me to positively identify it. Service station was real busy on a Saturday so I didn't want to wear out my welcome and didn't spend much time poking around. I did see a wire coming came from up there down on the driver's side of the tranny that fit into something to felt kinda round and was caked with grime down where it connected into whatever it was connecting to but the wire felt tightly attached. Am I on the right track? Also trans fluid was about half-a-quart (how could I?) low, so I topped it off not really expecting anything to change, and it didn't. Am I on the right track?
