Overdrive light coming on. 700 1992

I have a 1992 Volvo 740 wagon non turbo. When driving under any circumstances the overdrive light will come on and sometimes go off right away and sometimes stay on for the entire drive. It does not always downshift the transmission; but has a few times. I have tried pressing the button to turn off the light when it appears, without 100 o/o success. Any suggestions?
