Tree leaves in the ventilation.....and moldy smell 200 1985

A couple of weeks ago I turned on the heater fan in my 85' 240 and I heard a brief "snapping" sound which scared the hell out of me. After turning the blower motor to the high possition there where fragments of tree leaves blown though the 2 front vents. How did these leaves got in the blower motor casiong on the first place?

The ventilation seems to be clean now but I also get a moldy smell from times to times. I was reading some of the posts and FAQs and there was an article about making a custom air-cabin filter for the 700-900 Volvos.

The article was the following: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/HeatingAirConditioning.htm#HomemadeCabinAirFilter

Has anyone tried anything similar on the 240 series?
There is the air intake for the Ventilation system. I have both Haynes and Bentley and they barely cover the Ventilation/AC systems.

I also wonder if the evaporator drain is plugged. How can I check this?
No wonder why all new cars are comming with Cabin Air Filters.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Michael
