Coolant Temperature Sensor 200 1983

What are the symptoms of a problem with this sensor. More specifically, can the sensor malfunction in the sense that it affects your fuel injection function and still appear to operate properly on the temperature gauge? What exactly does it do with regard to the fuel injection?
