In the B23F there are 2 coolant temperature sensors, one for the gauge and one for the ecu. They are near each other under the intake manifold. The ecu uses the coolant temperature to adjust the mixture when in open loop mode (while the O2 sensor is warming up). Once the O2 sensor is hot the system goes to closed loop mode and the O2 sensor is used to keep the mix oscillating around the optimum.
