Hot overdrive solenoid ??? 200 1988

’88 240 auto trans overdrive solenoid

Pulled my overdrive solenoid and walked it over to the workbench. Supplying 12V to it for about a minute or so it seems to get rather warm (some may even say hot) to the touch. Is this normal? How likely is it that the internals are shorted out?
