Broken hood release cable. Replace internal cable? 200 1990

1990 240 . I broke the hood release cable while opening it. It broke off right at the handle connection. Question: can I just pull out the internal steel cable and thread a new one through it? It just seems like a huge effort to run a new one through the firewall. Oh, is volvo parts the only place to get a new cable that will work? Thanx.
