curious speedo 700

Speedo started working intermittently while back. Smack on the dash sometimes works to fix it for a while. Both odometers work even when not registering speed, so I know the sending unit is not the problem. Used to simply suspect a ground issue until I noticed this...........

The other day, while driving away from gas station and resetting trip odometer to track mileage just after fill-up, I noticed that when the reset button is depressed the speedo comes back to life. If I hold the odometer reset button in, the speedo will work until I release the reset button. It then falls back to 0 km/hr.

Speedo tends to work more often when cold outside?!?!?

Does the odometer reset button response tell me anything about what is going on?

Where should I check for ground issues?
