how important O2 sensor? 200 1988

Got under my new old 245 to replave muffler & tailpipe and noticed not much of O2 sensor came with car. Just the stub of what looks like one in header pipe near cat.

Car seems to run fine, just wondering what the pros & cons are of not having one? Haven't had the car long enough to determine MPG...

What the opinion of the brickboard?
