1986 - 740gle 'key question' 700

Does the ignition key to a 1986 740 sedan also open the trunk? This is my sons car and i was unaware that the truck lock didn't work. The keys he has for the ignition only insert about half way into the trunk lock. I am thinking that a key may be snapped off inside the lock. If so, has anyone ever removed a snapped off key from inside a lock before? TIA
