how much play should automatic shifter have? 200 1989

just out of curiosity, how much play should the shifter stick have when on any of the shifter mode. for example, when I put the shifter in P and move it, it moves about .25 inch fore and aft of the P. I think that's the same for D as well, but it never wiggles half way or even near another shift mode--just about .25 inch from where ever the shifter is on. is this normal? I was reading the faq and there is a section on this. so it kind of got me thinking and a bit paranoid about what is acceptable play on the shifter. thanks.
