Motor oil 200 1984

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if it is advisable to switch a high(er) mileage vehicle to synthetic, Ive always been told you shouldn't (something to do with gaskets and seals...) Is this true? My 84 has just under 139k miles on it, and it has always ran on conventional oil, though I would like to use synthetic because of its advantages. I haven't switched over because I don't want to if it isn't good for it. Can someone shed any light on this topic? Thanks in advance!
