760 1989 gle front wheel bearings 700

my 1989 760 s front are in need of replacement,very sloppy.Ive retightened them with no success.
Question can the plain bearings be replaced without going down the road, of replacing the entire hub unit,my brother runs a bearing supply company so bearings are no problem
Im sure I read of somebody doing this on the board,cant find anything with a search though
