MAIN FUEL PUMP hiss, air sucking in at seam 200 1985

struguling through intermitant power loss and idle swing/surge 85 240 auto.
while preparing to change filter noticed that on the seam on the back side is sucking air.
Is this normal?
did not replace filter nappa gave wrong one.
I'll try again tomorow
