86 244 tranny issues

I just got a 86 244 DL but it "drives" only in R and D1. Engine just spins in D and D2. The previous owner said, "I put about a quart or two of Type F transmission fluid." I tried flushing out the system with 8 quarts of MerconIII and it didn't make any difference. I wasn't able to get underneath and drain the fluid before the "flush." I just disconnected the ATF cooler return line and filled as the fluid came out. The color of the original fluid was fairly dark and just a slight bit murky. Could it be the valve bodies are caked on with crud? I don't know what happens when you mix the two transmission fluids.
