240 turbo smoking 200 1984

I am looking at buying an 84 240 turbo wagon which has 17,000 miles on a rebuilt engine. Looks to be in good shape and run trouble free until after about 30 minutes when the turbo starts smoking badly. Does this sound like a serious problem and a car that should be avoided or something simple that my rookie auto brain is unaware of. Sorry to not be a member but have tried signing up several times except brickboard never emails me my password when it says it does. Thanks for any suggestions.
