Lock out mechanism on a 5 speed. 200 1989

You know that thing inside the shifter that pulls up the piece of plastic which locks out reverse unless you pull up the little donut? I broke that thingy on the inside of the shifter, a kind of linkage between donut and plastic block.
I just took the plastic block off (it shifts into first and reverse a lot better now!) but I'll have to make it right before I give the car to my daughter. She will, in all liklihood, be confusing first and reverse a lot and be doing some unintentional backing up, a lot.
How can I fix that inside-the-shifter linkage?
Do I have to salvage another shifter? In the freezen cold?
Thanks.
