Valve noise 700

I'm getting some valve noise, especially one strong sounding tap on my 1990 740 Turbo motor with 140k miles. I had the chance to hear a 1994 740 turbo today with 90k miles and the motor was so quiet, making mine sound like a diesel. If I have the valves adjusted should this take care of the problem or do I need to go for a head rebuild? The car runs great but I want my Volvo to sound sweet and smooth. I have gotten estimates of $1200 to $1500 for a head rebuild. Opinions?
