Friend's 242T

Lock mechanism for the ignition key won't turn. Key goes all the way in , but wont turn at all. Any ideas? We're sure it's not just the wheels cocked to one side holding the lock still, the wheel moves a little, but still can't get it to turn. Is it true that you would have to replace the entire steering column. Seems to be what the dealer told us. This doesn;t seem to be a gradual thing, worked fine, then not.
