I am tired of my 89 745TA (206k mi) leaking from the rear crank seal. Even after a rebuild 15k ago it has started to leak again leading me to believe 1) that I should find a different mechanic and 2) the crank probably has a groove in it from seal wear. My question is how to fix it right. I will bite the bullet and fix it, but I don't want to go in after it again and again. I have looked all around here in Race City and none of the race parts suppliers has any seals that are better than any other. One even told me that Yates, Hendrick, and Earnhardt use standard Fel-Pro. Another told me about a crank saver sleeve that would go over the groove but didn't know of a supplier for Volvo. I read in the FAQ that the 7mm seal is designed for this situation as it moves the seal lip away from the groove. Since this engine is recently rebuilt I am looking forward to high mileage from it but having to put a quart of Mobil 1 in every 1500miles or so is not my idea of a reliable engine. Does anyone have a permanent fix for this seemingly common problem? Where can I get a crank saver sleeve or is the thinner seal the permanent answer?
