How do I test the temp gauge on an '84 760 T? 700

The temp gauge on my '85 760 turbo gives a very low reading when the car is fully warmed up. Is there a way to test the gauge? I thought that I remember something about connecting a resistor between the sender wire and ground, but I'm not sure.
