Engine cutting out. 700 1988

Now that I have finally gotten the fuel issues fixed in my car the wife’s 88 745 190k has decided to act up. She was in line to pick up our son from school yesterday and she turned off the motor when she tried to crank the engine it would not start. The engine turned over it just would not start. I did not think to have her look at the tach. But she waited a few moments and it started and she was able to make it home without a problem. I looked at it when I got home and the only thing that I noticed was the plug for the hall sensor was hanging out of the distributor. Of course it was running fine. When she was on her way to work today it started acting up again and she said the engine was trying to cut out. She told me that the tach was going from around 3k towards 0. This and the condition of the hall plug leads me to believe that the hall sensor it the culprit. I did pull the fuel pump relay and various fuses and they were in good condition.
Do you think that I am on track with this because I would sure love to find something easier to fix.
Thanks.
