front crank seal B23F 200 1984

I need to remove the crank nut in order to get at a leaking crank seal. I have in the past used the 'old rope trick' on my Jensen to accomplish this. I stuffed copious amounts of clean rope down number one cylinder and used a johnson bar with a 22mm socket to break the crank nut free. The rope prevents the engine from turning. Is this technique something to be avoided on the B23F? Are there other simple techniques to acomplish the same objective, that do not call for special Volvo tool number 5034??
TIA
