Cams What Am 1800 1970

Whew. After reading the cam discussion I feel a little like I did walking through the redwood groves. But I wonder if the assembled brainage can answer this more practical cam question: I'm about to have a valve job done and would like to find out what kind of cam the previous owner put in. Is it possible to get an idea of this by measuring the lift (with a dial indicator) and duration (by watching the crank pulley) and then plotting these points. Basically, could I do this and then one of these experts could look at the results and say Oh "Sure, that looks like a D grind" or an E grind or whatever. Obviously I'd prefer not to have (to pay) to pull the cam out if I don't have to.
