Specific A/C retrofit questions, please help if you have done this 700

My 89 740 GL 8 valve is in want of A/C. I know its still winter in most places but here in Hawaii between 11 and 4 A/C is very nice even in March. Besides I hate having things in the car that don't work properly.

I read in the FAQ's that Diesel Kiki compressors are quote "shit"
and not worth converting to R134. Of course mine is that brand with 135K and no charge. Have no idea when it quit as I've only had the car a few months.

Checked my auxillary cooling fan by jumping it and it works fine.
Not sure how to jump the compressor.

I am planning on using the Volvo retrofit kit and possibly a Smart VOV variable orifice tube as it claims to reduce hot idling temperature by 5 - 12 degrees at the vents while reducing compressor load and improving fuel economy in city driving.
Apparently these are used commonly in climates like Arizona.

Can anyone with experience verify or advise me on whether I should attempt to revive the compressor with R134 retrofit or comment on using one of these variable orifice tubes?

Also is it necessary or worth it to remove the compressor to drain the oil?
No one seems to discuss this anywhere in the FAQ's. The mechanic that is going to pull the vaccum after retrofit says he can suck the old PAG oil out and it won't cause a problem.

It seems insane that no compressor seems to have drain hole forcing removal if one wants an oil change.

Any advice highly solicited and greatly appreciated!
