switch to synthetic oil? what weight is best? 200 1986

hi all, i've been reading up on how much better synthetic oils are for your engines and wonder if i'd be able to switch my '86 245 over to that kind of oil. is there anything i would have to replace in order to do this? and special kinds of cleaning beforehand? and what weight would be best for my 200K car? Thanks!
